Dear Mr. Wilkinson,

I'm really going to miss you. I will remember some of your jokes. There were so many I'm not sure if I'll be able to remember them all but I'll try my best! I had a great year with you because you made learning so much fun (especially the history stories).
I will keep you in the round-tower of my heart.

Love, Taylor Hansen

Hi Mr. Wilkinson! You were the coolest teacher in the world! You had the most creative ways of learning! Everything you taught us had a fun TWIST and you always kept the subject educational. I never really got the jokes that you told me, but I laughed anyway. I remember that one time on our Peaks Island trip you told me that we were going on a boat ride, it sounded like you were serious and I believed you, but we never went on that boat ride, I was kind of upset.
My Mom was a chaperone and told me that the boat ride was just a joke, I didn't find it very funny but I guess your just a dry guy!!!
HIGHLIGHTS OF THE YEAR:
Freddy (Caleb), VIDEOOOOO and MANY MOREEEE (ha ha)
Hope you have an extrordinary retirement!!! I'll miss seeing you when I go to the Elementary School for my brothers and sisters activities, but I'll always remember you as a teacher!!!

Dear Mr. Wilkinson,

Don't know where to begin to "sell" you on just 2 more years. (Hoping Sammi would learn from the BEST!)

You are everything both a Parent and Student could hope for.

Your talents are endless, and we know that life will show you have inspired "A Genius," "An Artist," "A President," "A Computer Scientist" and many more amazing citizens- with you the Childrens' dreams are endless.

Retirement - We wish you new beginnings, times to enjoy the new, and more time for us oldies, we hope that as an incredibly young Grandfather your time is full of laughter, peace, joy and accomplishment.

We bow, handshake and bless you and your family.

Thank you,

The Guerette Family

Dear Mr. W,
Thank you for reminding all of us that learning can be fun. Your talents and enthusiasm are endless and you made a major impression on our daughter and our family. We only wish that all three of our kids could experience that special year with Mr. W.

Dear Mr. Wilkinson,

Thank you for making this year one of the most memorable school years our son will probably grow up to remember. Once, and maybe even sometimes twice in your life, if you are lucky, you have the pleasure of having a very special and extraordinary teacher in your life that you seek to emulate. This year was one of those remarkable years for Stephen filled with memories that will not soon be forgotten. We think you did a wonderful job! There was not one day this year that our son complained about having to go to school. He has looked forward to each day with the same enthusiasm you share for teaching and for your students. You will be truly missed by all.

The Bennett Family

I'm going to miss being able to pop in. Math Superstars has now led me to the 5th Grade Math Team. My favorite memory still is learning that we took all the school's green paper for our green screen. Whats been your favorite movie so far? I'm also now in accelerated math. Even now I still remember most of the things you taught us. I always tell people that you are my favorite teacher. If you want to contact me my e-mail is khtheman12345@yahoo.com.

I loved having you as a teacher, it was my best memory of Pond Cove! You taught us all so much, especially that you can have fun while learning. Your classroom was always filled with laughter and joy.

I still have our class movie, where all the students disappear one by one. I watch it to this day and it always reminds me of how much fun our class had!

Thank you for everything Mr. Wilkinson. We all love you and you will be missed greatly. HAPPY RETIREMENT!

The Renny Day
A poem for Mr. Wilkinson from his 2005-06 students & their grateful parents

The day was long, the class was dreary;
The children complained but were never weary;
That bologna sandwich, still clung to the wall;
Perhaps the janitor will clean it next fall;
How dearly Ren prayed for an early release.

The day was long, and the class was dreary;
The children complained but were never weary;
Ren dreamed of kids quietly listening to him,
But the hopes of the youth were snacks, TV and gym
And his eyes they were getting bleary.

Cape's winter was long; NCLB's, dreary;
The kids complained; Wonk Wilpo got weary;
He thought of Owen at home with a ball;
Of grumpy Tom Eismeier wandering the hall;
And ole Pond Cove seemed dreary.

Then it hit him: A movie, a souk, and clocks
I'll have these kids jump out of their socks!
To learn in the Renny-Ren Wilkinson way
Where there’s always hope for a kickball day
Learning way, way outside of the box

The teacher is smart, and tall, and funny,
Days in his class always feel so sunny.
The fish still swim in the tank the kids filled,
Except for the one or two that got killed.
And the teacher's still tall and funny.

The mug gets a marble for every good deed,
The kids want to fill it so Ren’s words they heed
It fills up quick as a speeding comet,
Now they can all watch Wallace & Gromit!
And Ren’s every word they heed.

Yo! Chill sad heart! and cease repining,
Spring's almost here; we're all GOOSES for whining;
"Mystery of the Mixed Up Tests" is a hit!
Even the lunch lady smiles a bit;
Today's the Oscars and the class is cheery.

Into each life some Ren did fall
Did leave its mark, they had a ball.
Such a fabulous, wild, unforgettable year
All thanks to a maestro who has no peer
For into each life some Ren did fall
The teacher who’s smart, and funny, and tall.

Mr. Wilkinson,

Wow, it has been forever. I still have very fond memories of our 3rd grade class, though. I just graduated from NYU with a degree in performance (singer/actress)...and technically my role as the sidekick in our class murder mystery movie was my first leading part, I really should put it on my resume!
Field trips were great, I remember my dad (your friend) coming along and being a chaperone, making friends with the boys, and then coming and playing some pretty intense games of kickball. Athletics may have not been my strongest point at that time, but I did ALWAYS have a blast...rememberin the 2 Nicks always competing over who could kick the ball further. I also remember the end of the year awards, where you gave me the kindness award and closet math brain...my mom was so touched that you made her cry, and yea I think I felt pretty good about it. That 3rd grade class was pretty fantastic, and even after all of these years I remember it more than I rememember any other elementary school class. You were always made everything fun, learning was never boring or tedious, you were very kind, very funny, knew how to motivate us, and you made sure to watch out for me, so thank you. Enjoy your retirement, because you definitely deserve it. Keep in touch!
Love,

Bree Douty

Dear Ren!

I do believe I was one of the few students who always thought of you as Ren while truly meaning no disrespect. This lack of titulation and other cultural misunderstandings you took in your stride from day one. I entered your classrom late and alone on the first day of school. I had already managed insisting on taking the school bus alone and getting lost in the PC parking lot while speaking Norwegian and with an English vocabulary limited solely to the subject of ice cream. From that day on I made huge leaps in learning, not to mention self-confidence. Despite my many pranks, only once did I notice you sweating, after I brought my traditional Norwegian knife to show and tell and could not for the life of me understand why you should keep it safe for me. After some convincing I suspiciously let you have it. You somehow took my great talent for pestering people and turned it into intellectual competetiveness, allowing me to catch up with the native speakers in no time. How did you manage this? I've often wondered. Please enlighten me if you know. Perhaps part of the answer lies in your methods, always some new problem-solving game lurking around the corner. But a great deal must lie in your life philosophy, your views on the human condition, your innate kindness and your true respect for children.

Anyways, thought you'd like to know I've kept at it these years. Now I'm 22 bogged down with exams for the fifth year of med. school only one week away. I recieved a temporary licence to practice after Christmas,and I've got a job this summer working with those most fickle and interesting of creatures, children. I'll be a junior doctor in pediatrics at a University of Oslo Teaching Hospital nearby. Next year I'll take my final exams. I have two years time waiting for my man to finish med school and plan to spend it doing something completely different, law, philosophy, political idea history, art, who knows? Suggestions are accepted with thanks. You are always welcome should you find yourself in this part of the world, or on facebook in the cyberworld. Which is where I heard of this blog, from Bree Douty.

It takes a special teacher to bring out the best in so many, allowing us to realize our widely different potentials. I would not have gotten where I am today without you. All kudos to you for imprinting an attitude of challenging the established unto us your students. It is an ever more precious skill. I hope you spend your retirement enjoyably and live to a ripe old age. In the honorable academic tradition I salute you: VIVAT! CRESCAT! FLOREAT!

Dear Mr. Wilkinson,
Although I have not seen you that recently, just having Mo in your class reminds me of all of the fun memories that I had when I was in your class. You have always been my favorite teacher!

Third grade with you as my teacher, is by far my most memorable out of all of my elementary school years. You made learning so much fun. School was never boring with you! You would create creative games for us to play(like math superstars and the learning "goggles"), and we would learn without really realizing it because we were having so much fun! You also helped me to become a great writer. We always had our Wednesday writing assignments, and I loved when we got to write our own stories! I also remember how you would play with us out on the playground at recess. I loved playing the circle-dodgeball game, and thought it was so cool that we had a teacher who would actually play with us!

By far the highlight of the year was the class movie. Ours was based on your upcoming birthday, and we would disappear from you one by one secretly going to your surprise party. I will never forget having to reach into the trash can and pull out a spit-covered note that was supposedly a "clue" that would help us solve the mystery. I still watch our movie and always laugh to see how young we all seem and how much fun we had in your class.

I hope you have a happy retirement, but Pond Cove is definately at a loss. It is losing one of its best teachers of all time! Your kindness and fun-loving attitude towards all of your students helps each and every one of us grow and learn. I don't think any of your students will ever forget you. I know I won't!
Once again, HAPPY RETIREMENT!

Ren,
I am writing this as we are waiting for your first grandchild to be born! You, who have impacted so many young people's lives through your dedication to teaching, now have the chance to instill that same passion for learning and enthusiasm for life into your grandson. Though you will no longer make the long drive into Cape Elizabeth each and every day to teach your eager third graders, your days of educating young people will not soon be over. I am so grateful to you and Jane for all joy you've shared with me and, most of all, for your two daughters who are my best friends- my sisters. All the best, Ren! We cannot wait to see you in Philadelphia and introduce you to your new family member!
